Letters to Michael
And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” Revelation 5:2 NIV
I have had a new revelation this morning. Deep in the beautiful truths of ‘Good, Good Father’ and ‘Is He Worthy?’ sung by Chris Tomlin – those beautiful words washing over me, soothing me as my morning begins, I make a new decision. Michael needs to hear those words, those truths.
Michael is beyond my reach. Locked in a broken mind and a tormented spirit; at the unkind mercy of a broken justice system and sentenced to a life behind bars and in the company of felons. Because Michael is a felon himself.
The voices he hears are the ones locked inside his brain. The ones who don’t belong there. It is hard for him to silence them. As he says, “They tell me to do things that aren’t smart.”
Sometimes the drugs work. The heavy dose of Haldol keeps the evil at bay much of the time. But if the dosage is off, or if something traumatic happens to Michael, the voices come back with a vengeance and Michael is usually able to find some brutal way to harm himself. And maybe in the process threaten to harm others.
Is there any way to change the message? To change the lies parading around in his brain as truth?
Michael has never known a man as a good, good father – but God tells us He is. I think I will tell Michael about a good, good Father. I have been fortunate enough to have one here on this earth and to know one in heaven. I can share the words, the truth with Michael about a good, good father.
It is easy to see that the world is broken and all creation is groaning – but it is good to remind ourselves that the light can break through the darkness, and the glory of the Lord can shine within our midst. I must remind Michael of this.
I have been writing letters to Michael for maybe five years now. I have never known anyone so broken, so buried beneath the darkness. I have decided today to give him words of light in these letters I write. Words of hope. Words that tell the truth of God.
Perhaps they will silence those other words of those other voices.
I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.” Revelation 5:4,5 NIV
